Leigh RMI 1 Northwich Victoria 0

Northwich Vics
By Matt Lawton April 12 2004
David McNiven’s goal gave RMI their first victory in seven games with a strike just before the half hour mark in front of a Hilton Park crowd of just 339.
With both sides already relegated, there was little riding on the game, although it is still mathematically possible for RMI to stay up if they win their two remaining games, hope that Farnborough don’t pick up maximum points in both of their remaining games and also hope that Barrow finish outside of the top two in the final Unibond Premier Division table. As you can tell by the length of the scenario, it’s unlikely to happen.

RMI had the first chance of the game when Chris McGrath, who was later to leave the field through what seems to be a bad injury to be replaced by Steve Gunby, headed straight at Ben Connett in the Vics goal from Andy Roscoe's free kick after just four minutes of the game.

Richard Norris and Carl Rezai exchanged long distance shots over the bar before top scorer David McNiven converted Roscoe's free kick to give the hosts the lead.

RMI's Trinidian striker Mario Daniel fired wide as the Railwaymen looked for a second before Northwich pushed on for an equaliser, with Leigh centre back Neil Durkin twice blocking shots from Mark Devlin as the visitors stepped up the pressure.

However, Vics position adrift at the foot of the league was seemingly justified as they failed to make a serious challenge to RMI's lead, who could've increased the margin of victory late on when both Tristram Whitman and McNiven missed chances.
