Halifax Town 2 Leigh RMI 1

Halifax Town
By Matt Lawton April 9 2004
Leigh RMI's four year existence in the Nationwide Conference came to an end this evening when they only managed to return over the Pennines with a 2-1 defeat at relegation rivals Halifax Town.
The Railwaymen travelled over the Pennines in the knowledge that anything less than the maximum three points would mean that RMI are unlikely to survive in the Conference, although with the uncertainty over the promotion candidates from the Unibond Premier League there could be a lifeline for the side that finishes third from the bottom of the table, but even that is seemingly out of reach of RMI at the minute.

Both sides had much the same amount of play early on, with Craig Midgley forcing a decent save from RMI's Australian goalkeeper Ian Martin, while former Bury midfielder Steve Gunby twice tested Mark Cartwright in the Halifax goal.

Unfortunately, it was the hosts who first hit the net, when Jonny Allan fired past Martin after twenty five minutes, before Colin Little, Midgley and Lewis Killeen all had attempts on the RMI goal as 'Fax pushed forward for the killer second goal, and they promptly got it on the stroke of half time when Steve Bushell volleyed home.

Substitute Mario Daniel pulled one back in the second half but the writing was on the wall, and RMI will now just be playing for pride for the rest of the season.

I hope you're happy now Mark Patterson.
