Leigh RMI 0 Burton Albion 1

Burton Albion
By Matt Lawton April 3 2004
An early first half goal for the visitors from Dale Anderson gave Burton ALbion a one-goal victory, leaving Leigh RMI to stumble to their second home defeat of the week and casting them adrift from safety at the bottom of the Nationwide Conference table.
RMI went in to the game knowing full well that only a victory will do, and their early approach demonstrated that, with Tristram Whitman, playing the final game of his loan deal from Scarborough, had a shot cleared by former Nottingham Forest defender Steve Chettle after just twenty seconds.

However, Burton came back with a chance after two minutes when Robert Gill headed wide, before Dale Anderson gave the visitors the lead after just eleven minutes when his left-footed strike beat Ian Martin in the RMI goal.

Albion could've made it 2-0 barely two minutes later when Glenn Kirkwood’s shot crashed against the woodwork from Sam McMahon's corner.

RMI’s Trinidian striker Mario Daniel had a chance to equalise after twenty minutes but his twenty strike flashed wide of Matt Duke’s goal, before Wayne Maden fired an ambitious long-distance strike wide of the goal ten minutes later, while a shot from top scorer David McNiven was safely stopped by Duke just before half time, with the Brewers still leading by a goal to nil at the half-way stage.

The Railwaymen came out for the second half knowing that their very Nationwide Conference existence, and possibly even the whole existence of the club, hangs in the balance and could depend completely on them scoring at least two goals and winning the game, especially with the shock news that relegation rivals Halifax Town, who RMI visit on Good Friday, are 1-0 up against promotion-chasing Hereford United at the Shay, though thankfully Farnborough Town were 1-0 down at Margate at the break.

The Brewers had the first chance of the first half after ten minutes when Robert Gill’s twenty-five-yarder flew wide of the RMI goal.

RMI midfielder Carl Rezai had a chance to equalise after an hour but his header was saved by Duke following Andy Roscoe’s free kick after Burton’s Craig Dudley fouled Rezai, before McNiven fired over, shortly after Dale Anderson missed a chance to get his second of the game for the visitors, before Anderson was replaced by the returning Andrew Corbett.

RMI’s day was summed up with less than ten minutes remaining when Wayne Maden, who has been one of the few bright spots of the season, had to leave the field because of injury, to be replaced by former Bury man Steve Gunby, before Sam Shilton almost sealed it for Burton when he smashed the woodwork from the edge of the box.

Despite being in desperate need of a goal, it was RMI who were on the back foot, and Martin saved from Robert Gill before excellently tipping the ball around the post from Andrew Corbett’s shot.

The Railwaymen tried to pick up the pace near the end, with Tristram Whitman having his shot cleared by Steve Chettle, before Whitman crossed for substitute Damian Whitehead who headed wide, but it was too little, too late for RMI as they stumbled to another home defeat which casts them adrift from Conference safety, though thankfully two goals in the last fifteen minutes gave Hereford a 2-1 victory at The Shay against RMI’s relegation rivals, Halifax Town.
