Leigh RMI 4 Margate 2
By Matt Lawton
February 28 2004
Hope springs eternal at Hilton Park after Steve Brodie's two goals gave RMI a hugely vital Nationwide Conference victory over Margate.
RMI started well and were in front inside eight minutes when former Sunderland and Chester striker Steve Brodie scored his first ever Leigh goal with a back-post tap in from Mario Daniel's cross.

RMI doubled their lead just before the half hour when Margate defender Graham Porter fouled Mario Daniel, and David McNiven put the resulting penalty past Philip Smith in the Margate goal.

However, the visitors were back in the game barely two minutes later when Ian Martin was beaten by Adrian Clarke's looping header from the cross of former Farnborough striker Rocky Baptiste.

Fortunately, RMI were back in the lead three minutes later. Margate goalkeeper Philip Smith failed to properly control a poor back-pass and was tackled, with the ball falling to Brodie who had the simple task of scoring his second, slotting the ball in to the open goal to give RMI a 3-1 half time lead.

Ian Martin was almost caught out by Rocky Baptiste's second half lob, before Mario Daniel made it 4-1 with twenty five minutes remaining, lashing home after an excellent counter-attacking move.

Despite Darren Watson pulling a goal back near the end, RMI were coasting towards a deserved victory which reduces the gap between the Railwaymen and relegation rivals Tamworth and Farnbrough, providing RMI with more hope of survival against the odds.

Hope lives on.
