Leigh RMI 1 Stevenage Borough 3

Stevenage
By Matt Lawton February 15 2004
Former RMI star Dino Maamria helped condemn his former club to another defeat that leaves them deep in the relegation mire, seven points behind Tamworth and safety, with the Lambs having a game in hand after their participation in the FA Trophy on Saturday.
Stevenage started marginally the better, but it was RMI who had the first decent chance of the game when his long-range shot was saved by Stevenage’s former Sunderland goalkeeper Lionel Perez.

The visitors took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Maamria, returning to his former club, headed a Dean Brennan cross past Ian Martin to give his side a half-time 1-0 lead.

Stevenage doubled their lead shortly after half time when Anthony Elding fired home a Jon Brady pass to put ‘Boro in to a relative comfort zone. However, it only took five minutes for RMI to regain some hope when top scorer David McNiven scored yet another goal in what has been a fantastic season for the former Hamilton Academicals and York City striker.

Stevenage had a chance to regain their two goal cushion only five minutes later when Steve Redmond fouled Justin Richards, only for Maamria to see his resulting penalty saved by Ian Martin to deny him his second goal of the game.

Unfortunately, Stevenage didn’t need much longer to finally extend their lead, and they did just that when Justin Richards scored with twenty minutes remaining. Richards could’ve made it 4-1 near the end but his shot struck the woodwork after more than four minutes of time added on.

Time is running out for RMI.
