Squires Gate 1 Leigh RMI 3
By Matt Lawton January 7 2004
Leigh RMI were safely guided through to the next round of the Lancashire FA Marsden Trophy after a comfortable 3-1 win against Blackpool outfit Squires Gate at School Road, the home of the North West Counties League side.
First half goals from David McNiven, Damian Whitehead, who scored his first goal for RMI since returning to the club from Northwich Victoria, and a goal with the last kick of the first half from Ged Kielty gave RMI a comfortable victory.

The hosts replied with a solitary second half goal, with Holloway pouncing on a mistake from RMI goalkeeper Ian Martin.

So RMI are through to the next round of a competition which has only proved to be an irritance in previous years, although it did provide RMI with their first silverware in a few years last season, and it has boosted Leigh's confidence in the process.
