Telford United 5 Leigh RMI 0

By Jordan Reay
November 18 2003
Chris Murphy's hat-trick helped to earn Telford an impressive 5-0 home victory over an unimpressive Leigh. Telford extended their unbeaten run to six games whilst Leigh struggled to find any consistence.

Chris Murphy was once again Telford's hero bagging an impressive hat-trick with both Tony Naylor and Christian Moore grabbing a goal each, but it wasn't all plain sailing for the Bucks.

RMI made the better start to the game, with both David McNiven and Warren Peyton working Telford 'keeper Chris MacKenzie early on. But it was Telford who took the lead when Tony Naylor scored after a sustained spell of pressure with an unstoppable drive.

Peyton had another chance after 16 minutes, but he saw his curling shot tipped on to the post by MacKenzie. Telford took full advantage on 22 minutes when Lee Mills picked out Murphy with a well placed through ball and Murphy made no mistake in doubling Telford's lead.

Both Naylor and Mills went close before half-time, but came to no avail. Mills got the first chance of the second half but wasted a brilliant cross from Trevor Challis' cross, when he headed wide of the post. The Railwaymen still hadn't given up at this point, Paul Shepherd leading the way with a near-perfect lob that just crept wide.

Telford finally put the game beyond RMI when Murphy scored his second, unleashing a close range rocket into the roof of the net. This was well deserved by United, after they had a goal disallowed moments earlier, when John Grant's effort was ruled out for offside.

Ten minutes from time Telford made it 4-0 when Moore headed home a Michael Blackwood cross. Murphy completed a perfect afternoon and a 5-star performance for Telford when he completed his hat-trick after latching on to a Moore through ball in injury time.
