Accrington Stanley 2 Leigh RMI 0

By Matt Lawton October 25 2003
RMI may have succumbed to a late defeat in East Lancashire but it wasn't all bad for the Railwaymen, with the Leigh side providing plenty of positive points for caretaker managers Phil Starbuck and Steve Redmond.
A goal with twenty minutes remaining from former Bury and Hyde United front man Lutel James, followed ten minutes later by a goal from James Mullin may have meant that RMI's hopes of an FA Cup run to raise much needed funds ended for another year, but pride has been restored after a valiant performance.

The Leigh side put in a good performance full of fighting spirit, something which has been missing hugely so far this season, and it will certainly be encouraging to both Starbuck and Redmond, along with the Hilton Park faithful, that their side have got not only their hunger but a degree of team spirit back.

Former Oldham Athletic and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Gary Kelly again put in a sterling performance, proving his worth despite the lack of goalkeeping competition that no longer threatens his position to much of an extent, following the release of previous challenger Stuart Coburn a fortnight ago by former RMI boss Mark Patterson.

Leigh will be hoping that the hard work continues when they take on high-flying former Football League outfit Hereford United away from home next weekend.
