Morecambe 1 Leigh RMI 0

By Matt Lawton September 24 2003
Adriano Rigoglioso's late penalty for the Shrimpers earnt a deserved victory for the hosts against an attack-shy RMI in a Lancashire derby at Christie Park.
The hosts dominated throughout and but for the superb form of RMI goalkeeper Stuart Coburn, returning to the squad in place of former Ireland goalkeeper Gary Kelly who was man of the match in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Tamworth but missed the Morecambe game, Leigh would've fallen to a much heavier defeat.

Rigoglioso was brought down in the box by Warren Peyton in the eighty-eighth minute and picked himself up to fire home the penalty, although four minutes earlier the Shrimps should've taken the lead through another penalty, but Stuart Drummond's effort was excellently saved by Coburn.

RMI failed to create any chances of note and will have to improve hugely if they are going to prevent another fight against relegation, if not at least end their present winless streak of five games.

Morecambe fully deserved their victory and Leigh will certainly be disappointed with their attacking performance, though at least RMI boss Mark Patterson will be heartened by the huge competition taking place between Stuart Coburn and Gary Kelly to see who earns the right to be RMI's number one goalkeeper, with both players earning the man of the match award when they have played this week.
