Kendal Town 2 Leigh Genesis 0

By Matt Lawton
March 10 2009
Leigh Genesis were plunged further in to the relegation mire as hosts Kendal Town scored a goal in each half to comfortably run out 2-0 victors on a cold Cumbrian evening.

Genesis Interim Manager Lee Doherty was hit with problems even before the game had kicked off, with injuries and suspensions meaning that he had only thirteen available players from which to choose his squad. The likes of Ben McHugh, Danny Morton, Kyle Lambert and Scott Sephton were all missing from the squad, while experienced midfielder Andy Heald was completing the final game of a three match suspension picked up for his red card in the corresponding fixture with Kendal at Ashton last month.

Recent signing David Roberts made his full debut after making his first appearance in Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Ashton United, while Chris Dykes was to later make his first appearance of 2009 as a substitute for Chris Thompson, who found himself playing in a slightly unfamiliar midfield role for the second game in succession.

Kendal took the lead as early as the ninth minute, and it was to be typical of Leigh's luck that they fell behind on the counter attack after they'd seen a promising move break down near to the Kendal penalty area. Warren Beattie was afforded far too much time on the ball as the hosts pushed forward on the break, allowing him to nudge the ball wide for striker partner Lee Mulvaney, a former Leigh player, to cross to the back post for Michael Cole to head past Genesis goalkeeper Dean Porter.

Although Leigh were seeing plenty of possession in the final third of the field, they struggled to break down a resolute home defence, with only Phil Marsh and Dale Whtiham having sporadic success in trying to create opportunities, with Genesis a tad lucky not to fall two goals behind when Beattie's smart shot on the turn hit the outside of Porter's right hand post.

Just six minutes in to the second half, Leigh should have found themselves on level terms when Karl Brown fired a David Roberts cross towards goal and forcing Kendal goalkeeper Tom Bush to spill the ball, only for the goalkeeper to gratefully regain it at the second attempt.

A minute later, Porter was called upon to make a smart save with his legs from a near post Dave Foster header, but despite the introduction of Steve Settle from the substitutes bench, Leigh were struggling to make any headway in their opponents half, and the defeat was sealed on eighty three minutes when substitute Craig Hobson, a former Leigh schoolboy and ex-Atherton Collieries striker, appeared to kick the ball out of the hands of a grounded Porter and outmuscle Alex Cunliffe to roll the ball over the line to continue his impressive goalscoring season.

Leigh now look to pick themselves up ahead of Saturday's trip over the Pennines to face Bradford Park Avenue before welcoming Nantwich Town to Radcliffe Borough's Stainton Park home next Tuesday (17th March, 7:45pm).
