Defender Ben McHugh joined Leigh Genesis during the summer of 2008 after spending two years in Crewe Alexandra's world-famous academy.

McHugh was impressive in a succession of reserve team matches, prompting Leigh manager Steve Bleasdale to promote him to first team status, making his debut as a substitute in the 2-1 home win over Prescot Cables on 2nd September 2008.

After a short spell away from the club, McHugh returned to make his full league debut in a 4-0 defeat to Eastwood Town at Clitheroe's Shawbridge ground on Saturday 17th January 2009.
