Salford City 0 Leigh Genesis 2

By Matt Lawton August 5 2008
Two first half goals saw Leigh Genesis bring their intensive pre-season programme to a successful conclusion with a relatively comfortably victory on a rather damp evening at Moor Lane against UniBond League Division One North neighbours Salford City.

With the short trip down the East Lancashire Road representing Leigh's final chance to experiment before the real business of the UniBond Premier League begins with a tough trip to Eastwood Town on Saturday August 16th, Genesis manager Steve Bleasdale fielded a somewhat unusual side with players asked to fulfill roles that may be slightly different to what they'd be used to.

After losing 2-1 at Trafford on Saturday, only Leigh's second defeat of the summer, the travelling Genesis support were looking for a positive response, although it certainly wasn't going to be an easy game against a Salford side that had a clear emphasis on passing the ball wherever possible, with the hosts putting together several good passages of play, although they only occasionally threatened Tim Dittmer's goal.

Genesis took the lead halfway through the first half when Mark Smyth was fouled on the edge of the penalty area, dusting himself off to send a delightful left-footed free kick in to the net in a fashion that he has threatened for the past couple of friendlies.

Although Tim Dittmer was called in to action to make a terrific save to tip a shot over the bar, it was largely one way traffic and Leigh doubled their lead shortly before the break when Bradley Maylett broke strongly on the right flank, crossing for Smyth to head his second of the evening at the near post.

The second half saw a multitude of changes with the likes of Danny Penswick and Reece Kelly getting a run out, while Andy Heald enjoyed an impressive return to the side during the second period.

The emphasis may have been on experimentation, but Leigh were good value for their victory whilst also keeping many of their cards close to their chest, mindful of any potential UniBond League scouts who may have hoped to learn more about the side from witnessing this game.

Good news. Couldn't make the game tonight. What was so unusual about the team by the way?

Well the players were wearing shirt numbers completely unrelated to their position, and it seemed as though Mansaram was encouraged to spend more time out wide than usual. Maybe to confuse any watching scouts?
