Lancaster City 0 Leigh Genesis 1

By Matt Lawton
July 31 2008
Leigh Genesis got back to winning ways this evening with a 1-0 victory away to UniBond League Division One North outfit Lancaster City, with the win at the Giant Axe proving to be a degree more comfortable than may be first suggested by the scoreline.

Although Leigh RMI lost 3-1 on a pre-season visit to the Giant Axe last summer, a similar scoreline was never likely to be a prospect as Steve Bleasdale's side largely controlled the game from the outset.

With Saturday's 1-0 home defeat to Woodley Sports putting paid to Leigh's unbeaten pre-season record, they began in determined mood, midfielder Jonathan Goulding placing a shot narrowly wide of the left hand post after a neat Darren Mansaram lay-off.

Genesis might have taken the lead twice inside the first twenty minutes, striker Mark Smyth, returning to Leigh after a short spell in the UEFA Cup with Bangor City, first firing a right footed shot against the post before a lobbed shot thumped against the crossbar, the rebound being hit against the outside of the post by Brad Maylett.

Just half an hour in to the game, Leigh incredibly hit the woodwork for a fourth time, Richard Chetcuti volleying a pinpoint Alex Mortimer cross against the crossbar, but it certainly wasn't to be fifth time lucky just a matter of minutes later when Maylett drilled a shot across goal, only to strike the foot of the right hand post.

For once, the Lancaster goalkeeper wasn't to rely on his woodwork to save him shortly before half-time, doing superbly when falling backwards to claw away a Rob Marsh-Evans header.

Just a few minutes in to the second half and Leigh finally got the goal that they richly deserved, Darren Mansaram cutting inside on to his foot to swerve a shot in to the net, ironically gaining the benefit of a deflection after his side had previously been lacking the little bit of luck they may have required.

With the usual pre-season friendly pattern being followed as a multitude of substitutions disrupted the flow of the game, Karl O'Donnell was superbly denied by a diving Lancaster goalkeeper, seeing his shot tipped around the post before Thomas Moore saw a shot flash narrowly wide of the post.

Leigh had a huge scare towards the end when, with their first serious threat on goal, Genesis goalkeeper was beaten, only for Andrew Teague to superbly spot the danger and clear the ball off the line for a corner, albeit rather lucky to see it scrape the crossbar on it's way out.

That scare apart, Leigh dominated the game from start to finish and, another day, might have scored the hatful that their neat and incisive passing play might certainly have deserved.

The Genesis pre-season trail is now nearing it's conclusion with only two friendlies remaining before the first UniBond Premier League outing away to Eastwood Town, with Leigh facing two short trips in quick succession; travelling to Trafford on Saturday (3pm) before an away fixture at Salford City next Tuesday (7:30pm).

Leigh Genesis (all used); Steve Dickinson, Bradley Maylett, Alex Mortimer, Paul Booth, Andrew Teague, Rob Marsh-Evans, Jonathan Goulding, Chris Holland, Mark Smyth, Darren Mansaram, Richard Chetcuti, Jerome Watt, Karl O'Donnell, Thomas Moore, Josh Wilson

I must admit that I'm not convinced as to how exactly we'd fit Smyth in to the team when you consider we've already got Mansaram, Stepien, Chetcuti, O'Donnell and Moore to play up front, but Smyth certainly had a good game tonight playing in a role just behind Mansaram.

No mention on Fitzgerald maybe just resting unless he has a slight knock. No sign of Healdy these last two games, don't know if anyone else has noticed.

Defence played well, didnt need to deal with a lot. The use of wing-backs worked better in the first half than I did in Formby I thought

Quite right Dave, I thought Maylett looked a lot more comfortable in that role this time around, although I suppose that's probably because he didn't have too much defensive work to do!

Sorry to say it, but I think we looked more sound without Fitzgerald - Booth, complete with haircut, had a good game as did Marsh-Evans and Teague, who personally I think may prove to be one of the signings of the season.

I'm quite liking this idea of playing someone just behind the front two, I must admit; Watt has looked pretty good in that role given the chance.

He was indeed, scoring 11 goals though I don't think he'd be first choice to be honest if Mansaram, Chetcuti and Stepien stay fit.

well you never know, he is a good scorer of goals, but the strikers we have, have been doing a good job

Put it this way, I'd be very disappointed this season if our top scorer only got 11, especially when bearing in mind that a couple of those came in Lancs Trophy games.

Fancy Mansaram, Chetcuti and Stepien will bag at least 30-odd between each other.

Got a feeling that Mansaram may be that man though he'll certainly set a few up as well; reckon O'Donnell will be able to chip in with a few as well.

We've got attacking options. Mansaram, Chetcuti and Stepien I think could all bag at least 10 each if played reguarly as all seem pretty good finishers and would complement each other. Apparently Stepien is as good at setting up a teammate as well as scoring.

At least we're covered for injuries and Smyth could be used in the role behind a chosen front two, turning at defences and running at them and Chetcuti likes to come deep to turn and run at defences and is good outwide so like I say we've got good options and it's a good headache to have.

Cant see him leaving out fitzgerald though unless he really has a stinker at begining on season. Isnt he club captain?

well during friendly's he has had the armband, and when he has gone off it has gone to holland

I'm not sure that Fitz has been officially confirmed as captain - as Paul says, Holland has had the armband as well, but I don't think he looks comfortable as part of a 3 man defence.
