Holland, Chris

Former England Under 21 international midfielder Chris Holland joined Leigh Genesis on a free transfer in July 2008 from Blue Square North side Southport after an eighteen month spell at Haig Avenue.

Holland began his career as a trainee with Preston North End but, after just one league appearance at Deepdale, secured a £100,000 transfer to Premier League giants Newcastle United in January 1994.

After making two and a half years at St. James' Park, Holland had a loan spell at Birmingham City that later turned in to a permanent £600,000 transfer in October 1996.

Holland spent more than three years at St. Andrew's, appearing on almost seven occasions prior to a £100,000 transfer to Huddersfield Town, where he made more than one hundred and twenty appearances before a free transfer to then-Football League side Boston United in March 2004.

Holland made eighty five league appearances during his time at York Street before a move in to non-league football for the first time in his career with his move back to the North West and his spell at Southport prior to signing for Leigh Genesis, where he made his debut in the 2-0 defeat to Eastwood Town on the opening day of the 2008/09 UniBond Premier League season.

Holland was a long-term target of Leigh Genesis manager Steve Bleasdale, who recognised the experience and quality that Holland can bring to the Leigh midfield during the 2008/2009 UniBond Premier League campaign.

Holland scored his first goal for Genesis in his tenth game for the club, putting Leigh in front in a 4-2 defeat to Whitby Town on 20th September 2008.

Holland earned himself a special place in the hearts of Genesis supporters when he rejected the approaches of other clubs to represent Leigh, free of charge, in their emotional FA Trophy tie with Cammell Laird in November 2008.

In mid-November 2008, Holland finally had an offer that he couldn't refuse and left Leigh to join Blue Square North outfit Fleetwood Town.
