Although Tamworth winger Nick Wright should have done better than to lob the ball well over Tim Dittmer's crossbar early on, it was RMI that made the brighter start and indeed were unlucky not to take the lead on fourteen minutes when Tamworth goalkeeper Alex Cisak was thankful for the intervention of his near post as Richard Chetcuti came within a whisker putting his side in front when meeting Owen Roberts' pinpoint cross from the left flank.
With visitors Tamworth ambling towards mid-table mediocrity and seemingly awaiting their summer holiday, it was the hosts that were doing all the running, again unfortunate not to go in front after a classy counter attack, full of pace and vigour, saw Chetcuti neatly lay the ball off to the supporting Jonathan Goulding, only for the midfielder to place his shot narrowly wide of the target after sending Cisak the wrong way, blotting an otherwise flawless copybook as the ex-Morecambe man dominated the midfield battle with a tenacious and busy performance.
Recent Leigh signing James Dunn was forced to retire from the action through injury after less than twenty five minutes, and Gavin Salmon looked a lively replacement, nodding the ball wide of the target from a Roberts corner early in the second period after the striker had done superbly to lose his marker at the far post.
Dittmer was left to enjoy the Lancashire sunshine as he had a particularly quiet afternoon in the Leigh goal, with RMI again coming close to snatching a decisive goal when Scott Metcalfe's left foot cross was volleyed just wide of the target in acrobatic fashion by Chetcuti, with neither side finding a breakthrough before full-time.
The final whistle prompted the warm sunshine that had lit up Hilton Park throughout the afternoon to give way to a freak shower of sleet, perhaps symbolic of RMI's improved recent performances in reality doing little for their chances of survival.
Leigh RMI; Tim Dittmer, Scott Metcalfe, Andy Wright, Andy Heald, Paul Booth, Rob Marsh-Evans, Brad Maylett (Steve Settle), Jonathan Goulding, James Dunn (Gavin Salmon), Richard Chetcuti (Cayne Hanley), Owen Roberts
