Leigh RMI 2 Workington 1

By Matt Lawton December 26 2007
Two goals from Mark Smyth in the first six minutes of this vital Festive encounter gave RMI all three points in the first of two fixtures against Workington within the next week, gaining revenge for their FA Trophy First Round exit at the hands of the Cumbrians earlier this month.

Although last weekend saw RMI suffer an eventual 3-0 defeat at promotion chasers Kettering, the defensive effort of keeping a clean sheet for the first three quarters of the encounter was enough to suggest that a long-awaited victory was surely just a matter of time for the rock-bottom Railwaymen, and that assumption looked to be correct as former Liverpool man Smyth scored his first two league goals for the club within the opening six minutes, leaving visitors Workington shell-shocked.

The Reds halved the deficit with seven minutes remaining through Craig Johnston to spark a nervy finish, but Leigh goalkeeper Tim Dittmer held firm to ensure his side's first victory in the ten league games that have passed since the September win over Hucknall, marking the first three points under the management of Steve Bleasdale.

RMI now a test at home to local rivals Stalybridge Celtic, impressive 3-1 victors at front runners Hyde United this afternoon, on Saturday afternoon (29th, 3pm) before the return fixture at Workington on New Years' Day.
