Demba Ba Signing Complete & Confirmed By Pardew

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Demba Ba, on a free transfer from West Ham. The striker who will wear the number 19 shirt for the club becomes the 2nd signing of the summer for manager Alan Pardew.

The 26 year old, who only signed for West Ham in January of this year and became their top scorer, has signed a 3 year deal expected to be worth £55k a week plus a £500k signing on fee at Newcastle, similar terms which he rejected when offered by newly relegated West Ham. He became a free agent when their relegation triggered a release clause in his contract.

Pardew said after confirming the deal;

"Demba made a great impression with West Ham last season and is a great signing for this club. He has pace, excellent technical ability, is good in the air and, it goes without saying, has the ability to consistently find the back of the net. Moreover he has a great passion to play for Newcastle United."

The 6’3 Senegal International scored 7 goals in 10 starts for West Ham between January and May.

A good player who improves the squad-but it would have been interesting to be a fly on the wall for that medical (note no mention of that).

Anybody else starting to become concerned with amount of players we could lose in january ? Tiote demba and possibly shola going to African nations tournament just hope the board realize the possibility of this and prepare for it

I think we've got a fair bit of cover at centre mid, hopefully we'll get at least another striker in. That's another reason why getting rid of Best would be ridiculous, but I wouldn't put it past us (see loaning out Xisco and Routledge in the January transfer window).

That's a good point, Tom. As for cover at CM, who would that be? Guthrie, Smith and Perch inspire no confidence at all. With Cabaye and HBA in the starting XI that leaves Gosling and...?

Gosling, Barton might stick around, Guthrie's decent cover in my book, there's also Coloccini and Vuckic if we're scraping the barrell. Perch and Smith are still relatively capable of playing there if they stay, and there's also the revelation that we don't have to play 3 centre midfielders.

Guthrie, Smith and Perch, eh? That's who we're rolling with?

I'm hoping at least one of the new faces AP is going on about is a CM. I don't have a lot of confidence that we're going to keep Barton.

Opportunity for first team experience for Donaldson, Vuckic and Abeid perhaps?

If we get Gardner in we'd be fairly solid in central midfield. Will wait and see what happens in July-I think we will get another player who can play there (should Barton leave)

I agree we have cover for midfield on short term basis although wouldnt want some of the names mentioned playing long term if tiote was to be injured i was more concerned with the idea of losing two Center forwards when we all knew we needed another before the loss of Carroll add to that the weakened midfield when all three go away for international duty we could struggle over January period just hoping that this is something they are ready for and demba ba isn't the only striker brought in ! As much as lovenkrands has done for us helping with promotion an all he just doesn't have it at premier league level and I've read rumors best could be shipped out along with ranger

Great signing and a load that will get goals, and it has been a good point that we will need cover if we are going to be losing players for a few weeks. The only thing that is giving me some form of confidence is that we are doing business early and not leaving it late.

Short term cover we should be ok in Gosling and Guthrie, but would like to see us go for a another midfielder

in think we've got adequate short term cover in cm although i wouldn't like to rely on them for any length of time at this stage!

Still disagree about CM. Out wide, actually we're pretty well stocked now with Marveaux (until someone leaves). But I agree that FW is the priority. Ba will be taken for a few weeks by Senegal and I don't see why Nigeria won't select Shola again (unless he's injured, which doesn't help us).
