Tranmere Rovers v Oldham Athletic Match Discussion

By Deadly Submarine
February 28 2014

If you can't make Tranmere's game at home to Oldham Athletic on Saturday afternoon, why not join in the banter right here with other Rovers fans who are unable to attend...

Following football even at League One level is pretty expensive these days and no matter how much you love the Rovers, it will sometimes be difficult to make the games in person whether it be the lengthy away trips, or for exiles living elsewhere in the UK or abroad, the home games too. As a result, for those fans who can't make some of the Rovers games this season, we at Total Tranmere will be providing this match discussion thread for you to discuss developments with the game.

Celebration 2013-14

Tranmere of course, host  Oldham Athletic on Saturday afternoon in Skybet League One, so if you're not going to the game why not join in the banter right here while the game is going on? You could also use this thread to discuss other interesting scores throughout the league as well as discussing this game afterwards if you have been to watch the game live. What you discuss below is up to you but hopefully it can all be focused on one thread to make it easier for everyone to use.

Holmes in at right back and Kirby on the wing, however if I was John Mac. I would tell him to up his tackling game because so far I have never seen him win a 50-50 tackle. He needs to realise that he cant stroll through games and not do the physical bits as well. Bring on Robbo for the last 30 mins.if things need changing.

Think we will win it 2 1 and give ourselves some breathing space from the bottom 4, the only thing that concerns me is the lack of pace in the side.

unsure as we have lost the balance with the two going back to EFC. So going for a draw 1-1.

An exciting game. Was utterly confused when Koumas came off, but i guess if he hadnt Lowe wouldnt of been in the centre for the goal when we went 4-4-2 , so possibly a masterstroke in fact.

Got to admit though Robbo, looks past his best now? , he seems to take one turn too many all the time and loses the ball... we need another winger as i dont think kirby is too much of out and out winger?

Very dissapointing performance although give oldham some credit (they played nice football and organised)

despite 3 quality midfielders we resorted too often to hopeful punts down the line, we didn't press and hassle as a team either which is what we did great in the last game.

Missed Kennedy a lot and really do lack pace in the side....

1 fluke goal apiece despite that though the defence did ok apart from a poor spell 1st half.

If we can't get a winger on loan think the diamond may work better as allows 2 strikers and robbo behind them in the hole.

Again why Ryan Lowe is played wide is beyond me number of time he plays balls in the box and we need a ryan lowe on the end of them!!!

In the end a decent point as the performance was below par.

Mcmahon made a bold call with the sub (fair dues for having the balls to do it) but to me Wallace has been poor a number of times including today and seems undroppable.....That said i can see him maybe thinking Koumas may not have the legs in 442 but I disagree with that.

Totally bemused by Koumas getting subbed as he was our best player. Great run and cross from Cassidy for the second coolly nodded home by Lowe. Shocked by their first goal where Fon seemed to dive away from a shot that was coming straight at him! Glad to get a point in the end.

Lots of plus points and lots of minus points today. Superb performances by a few of our players - Lowe, Arthurworrey, Ash (apart from the misfortune for the second Oldham goal) while others were like passengers. The run and cross from Cassidy for the goal was world class but for most of the game he was ineffective due to being on his own. Our entire midfield was given a footballing lesson in the first half by what looked like a 50-year-old balding gorilla on the Oldham left but in the second it was Jenno who was bossing the game.
The move to 4-4-2 in the second have was exactly right but like everyone I am baffled that it was Koumas who was taken off. Wallace perked up after the substitution so maybe they had been getting in others' way and it was correct that he stayed on but exactly how bad does McMahon think that Koumas would be in a wide position that he would be less effective than Andy Robbo?

McMahon has made reference to the substitution on his recent report video.

A mixed outcome. Good that Koumas got another and Cassidy setting up one, but conceding two is a bit of a bummer.

That elusive two wins in a row remains elusive and Crewe's result adds pressure, but it could have been worse, however the need to bring in at least one new player still exists and with the proportion of two players wages being received and the savings on the two Everton players, then one or two new recruits should be feasible.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.

Important point today. I agree with the majority and was disappointed that KOUMAS was substituted. LOWE needs to be played centre forward not as a wide player and without his goals and work effort this season the league position would be a lot worse. They deserved a point today as the majority of the players really put a shift in. The two centre halves played well especially ASH who was also comfortable on the ball and brought it out of defence well. Will someone please cut the elastic that prevents the keeper from coming of his line and helping the back four out.

ROBINSON looks off the pace and what does he contribute other than trying to intimidate the opposition. Real hard men bust a gut and get stuck in!

Why does Crewe's result ''add pressure''? They drew at home just like us.

I thought it was digusting when booing the sub of koumas for kirby, thats one way to make kirby feel wanted. And for the sub it worked as we got at them bit more, so hope the people who booed feel silly now.

The booing was not aimed at Kirby as you suggest but at the baffling decision to sub Koumas. I never boo my team but I came close to booing that

The game needed changing and the only person you could take off was koumas, as if took jennings or wallace off then our midfield would have been over run.
It was proven to be a good substitute as we didn't look like scoring before it, people woild have been moaning if we hadn't made any subs and lost 2-1.

A pretty decent game, a fair result as neither side deserved too lose.

Robinson should only be used now as a sub as he hasn't got the fitness now to play much of a role.

It looks very tight at the bottom and nervous times are ahead.

There was a lot of booing were I was in the kop but as lobby said it wasn't aimed at kirby just at the decision to take koumas off. S.W.A

In my opinion it was not necessary to sub anyone in the midfield. The game changed when Cassidy assumed the wing role and Lowe moved into his best position. Hope McMahon takes note of that.

After twice being behind there is almost a sense of settling for a point but yet agin it is another home match where we fail to take 3 points from a relegation rival. I fear that when the dust settles on the season it will be games like this that may be the reason why we go down.

Like others I cannot understand the Lowe situation. For several seasons management has bemoaned not having a natural striker. We finally get a 20 goal plus player and play him wide. Is it any surprise that we so often fail to win home games?

Conspiracy theory Ryan Lowe is on a big bonus if top scorer in league and we're playing him on the wing to try and stop him scoring!

BigMart, the goal came from a breakaway by Cassidy up the wing. He ran halfway up the pitch and put in a great cross to League 1's leading scorer who skilfully nodded it home. Nothing to do with the substitution and a clear indication of why Lowe should be played as an out and out centre forward and not lost out on the wing. Koumas was playing well, his passing and crossing ability is far better than anyone else in the team. My opinion is he should have been kept on the pitch.
