Rovers sign two new faces as squad for 2013/14 season begins to take shape

It's been a busy day for Tranmere boss Ronnie Moore today, as Rovers completed the signing of two defenders on free transfers.

Left-back Evan Horwood and ex-Crewe man Stephen Foster both arrive on two-year deals as Tranmere completed their first bit of transfer business for the summer.

Horwood, 27, arrives from Hartlepool United, where he has spent the previous three seasons.

The defender amassed 138 appearances during his time at Victoria Park but was released following their relegation to League Two last season.

Born in the north-east, he began his career at Sheffield United, but made just one appearance in a four-year stay at Bramall Lane.

During his time with the Blades, he enjoyed loan stints at Chester, Scunthorpe, Stockport, York and Darlington, whilst following his release in 2008, he spent time with Grenta, and later Carlisle, before joining Hartlepool in 2010.

Foster, meanwhile, joins from Barnsley, having spent six years with the Oakwell club.

The 32-year old, born in Warrington, began his career with Crewe and made nearly 250 appearances for the Alex before joining Burnley in in 2006.

Following one year at Turf Moor, the centre-back moved on to Barnsley and accumulated 243 appearances for the Yorkshire side before being released after David Flitcroft's side successfully battled against relegation.

He was a popular figure in the Tykes defence before leaving Oakwell, and will add some much needed experience to a Tranmere back-line that kept just two clean sheets in the final 19 matches of the 2012/13 season.

Elsewhere, Rovers vice-captain Andy Robinson has also signed a one-year contract extension, keeping him at Prenton Park until June 2014.

Robinson, 33, was an integral part of the Tranmere side that held pole position in League One for much of League One last season, before suffering an injury hit second half to the campaign.

The winger, who has bagged 15 goals since returning to Rovers, initially on loan, in March 2010, is the third played to sign a new contract at Prenton Park, following Ian Goodison and Jason Mooney in penning new twelve month deals.
