On-loan midfielder returns to Derby following loan spell

Midfielder Arnaud Mendy has today returned to Derby County following the end of this three month loan spell with Tranmere Rovers.

Mendy, 20, arrived at Prenton Park on the final day of the summer transfer window, initially on a one-month deal, as cover for Tranmere's midfield, as Rovers had Paul McLaren, Joss Labadie, Alan Mahon, John Welsh and Ash Taylor all missing through injury.

The Frenchman impressed immediately and after scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory over Peterborough at Prenton Park, Rovers' first home win of the season, Mendy had his loan spell extended to the maximum three-month stay.

Mendy's loan spell came to an end this week, with his last game having set to be the Johnstone Paints area semi-final game against Huddersfield Town on Tuesday.

In his three months at Prenton Park, Mendy made thirteen appearances for the club, scoring once, with twelve of his appearances coming in League One.

The midfielder, who has made only one senior appearance for his parent club, Derby, can return to the club in January on a loan deal until the end of the season, should Les Parry wish to sign him.

Total Tranmere would like to thank Arnaud for the time he spent at Prenton Park and wish him all the best for the future.

well surely we cant keep every loan player?how many are we allowed in one season?must be near the limit already?

What do you mean surely we can't keep every player?! He's gone back...we can't extend the deal any further due to FA rules. We can however sign him again in January...

Returned to training and has played one behind doors squad friendly. Needs to get back on grass and play a couple of reserve games before first team

He started well in hs opening couple of games and when he scored that goal against Peterborough but I have to say he was very mixed after that and certainly wasn't consistent by any means but then that has been the story of the team as a whole so he shouldn't be singled out in that sense.

I wonder if he'll end up like Marvin Sordell, being a player that looked promising, but not enough, then next season finds big rise in form.

I was pleased to see Sordell doing well at Watford this season, but it did choke a little knowing he scored one goal for Tranmere at league 1, when he's been fairly freeflowing in the championship this season.

does anyone know how many players a club can have on loan at one time

I don't think there's a limit of how many players you can have at one time, but you can only have five in your match day squad in any given match. You can also only loan four players on long term deals (longer than five months) whilst a short term loan is a maximum of three months long (one month extended twice, i.e. Shotton a few years a go, or just a three month loan)
