In another new feature to Total Tranmere, Mark Ridgway brings you a look back at the events and happenings in N Power League One this weekend after Rovers remained in the bottom four with defeat at Southampton but how did the other teams in the League get on?........
On Saturday, no fewer than 22 of the 24 sides in League One were in action and with a total of 25 goals knocked in, there is plenty to report in this latest new feature on Total Tranmere......
Carlisle 1-0 Notts County
One of the happiest managers this weekend will be Carlisle Utd's Greg Abbott, whose side rose to second place and just four points off leaders Brighton with this home win. United didn’t have it all their own way against Notts County, who wasted a host of chances and came closest when Mike Edwards struck the woodwork with a header, however Gary Madine’s knock in sealed the points for the gritty Cumbrians.
Brighton 1-1 Bournemouth
Controversy at the Withdean helped close that margin between Brighton and the rest as the Seagulls threw away a lead late on for the second week running, last week it was against Rovers, and this week it was Bournemouth benefiting from the same outcome.
Marc Pugh converted from the spot in time added on to level the game; but Tommy Elphick's handball appeared to occur outside the box according to the home side. However the hosts only had only themselves selves to blame for failing to add to Kazenga Lua Lua's stunning opener from a short free kick.
Hartlepool 2-0 Peterborough
Ten man Peterborough failed to capitalise on Brighton’s slip by going down at Victoria Park. Peter Hartley headed in the opener for the hosts before Lee Tomlin was dismissed for a stamp on Leon McSweeney.
Gary Liddle wrapped up the points late on to kill off the disappointing visitors, who were foiled by the home stopper on a number of occasions.
Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 Leyton Orient
Sheffield Wednesday recovered from a disappointing first half to grind out three points against the London strugglers.
The hosts were booed off at half-time but improved after the interval and took the lead when Lewis Buxton headed home. Orient were the better side and had their chances but were clinical enough, but Nicky Weaver saved from Alex Revell and Dean Cox and the hosts move into a play off spot.
Colchester 0-3 Huddersfield
Huddersfield claimed their first win in four in the League and they made easy meat of a disappointing Colchester side who hadn’t lost at home this season until this game.
Lee Novak shot the visitors ahead just after the half hour mark and soon after Antony Pilkington finished off a fine move to double the lead, his third in four days. Substitutes Joe Garner and Jordan Rhodes then combined for the latter to finish, before Lee Croft was sent off late for two yellows.
Brentford 1-3 Oldham
Oldham returned to form with a victory at Griffin Park over strugglers Brentford. The hosts had taken the lead when Myles Weston slotted home after just four minutes, when he rounded the keeper but Dean Furman levelled for the Latics after Oumare Tounkara set him up, and the same man set up Kris Taylor to hammer them into the lead before Dale Stephens wrapped up the win from the penalty spot.
MK Dons 2-0 Dagenham & Redbridge
After an uninspiring first half, MK Dons scored twice in seven minutes to see off strugglers Dagenham, and Redbridge. Sam Baldock opened the scoring from a tight angle before Dietmar Hamann set up Mathias Doumbe to head in the second. Jermaine Easter missed a penalty and Sam Baldock headed against the bar with MK Dons other clear chances.
Southampton 2-0 Tranmere
Pre-season favourites Southampton are finally beginning to churn out a run of results, and this was their second 2-0 victory on the bounce as they comfortably saw off inconsistent Tranmere.
Rickie Lambert headed home the opener just before the break and not long after the interval, Adam Lallana knocked in the second, the hosts could have had many more but Peter Gulacsi did well to deny Lambert a second. Tranmere never threatened throughout and were overpowered by their League One opponents.
Plymouth 2-2 Charlton
Paul Benson is beginning to show Charlton fans what he’s all about as his brace at Home Park earned his side a point against unlucky Plymouth.
Bradley Wright-Phillips scored the opener for the hosts before Benson equalised after being set up by Rob Elliot. Yannick Bolasie appeared to have sealed the points for Plymouth with a thunder bolt from 25 yards,b ut Benson tapped in in injury time to early the Addicks a point.
Walsall 2-1 Exeter
Walsall moved off the bottom of League One as they saw off ten man Exeter. Walsall took the lead when Rueben Reid knocked in at the back post after a mistake from Troy Archibald-Henville.
Matt Richards doubled the lead with a glancing head before Archibald-Henville received his second yellow and took an early shower. Ryan Harley's placed finish pulled the visitors back into the game, and John O’Flynn should have made it 2-2 but his effort clipped the bar.
Rochdale 0-1 Yeovil
Yeovil have hit a little bit of form with another victory on the road at Spotland. The points were sealed when Luke Freeman tapped in but Rochdale had their chances and Craig Dawson headed against the bar, but they couldn’t find the equaliser.
On Monday night Swindon Town host Bristol Rovers in the West Country Derby to complete this weekend's set of League One Fixtures.
