Cats sign Ben-Haim

Sunderland have made their first signing of the 2009 January transfer window, bringing in centre-back Tal Ben-Haim from Manchester City. The Israeli international has joined the Black Cats on loan until the end of the season. Ben Haim, who has also played for Bolton and Chelsea, will add strength to Sunderland's squad as they look to move away from the relegation zone.

Ricky Sbragia, who has made no secret of his desire to sign a defender, said: "It's a position we've been short in so I'm delighted that Tal has joined us.

"I know all about him from his days at Bolton, he's got a lot of top-flight experience and he'll be a great addition to our squad."

Ben Haim, 26, has made 15 appearances for City this season, one of them coming in a 3-0 win at the Stadium of Light.
