DC signs new deal

Danny Collins has signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract with Sunderland. The 28-year-old defender is now committed to the Stadium of Light club until the end of the 2010-11 season. Collins, who has been at Sunderland since 2004, said: "I'm happy here and it's good to sign for another two seasons after this. I think the club is going places."

Collins arrived at Sunderland in the 2004-05 season, making him one of the longest-serving players at the club. Only Dean Whitehead and Grant Leadbitter have been at the Stadium of Light for longer.

The Wales international was signed from Chester City, whom he helped win promotion back into the Football League in 2004.

Collins, a centre-back who can also operate at left-back, has made 143 appearances for the Black Cats, scoring three goals.

He is set to make appearance number 144 in Sunday's Tyne-Wear derby.

The defender said: "It's forty-odd years since Sunderland have done the double over Newcastle - I didn't realise it was that long until I was told this morning. It would be good to make it happen on Sunday."
