A heavily disputed Leeds United penalty denied Town all three points at Portman Road last night.

In a very open first half both sides had chances to score goals but a combination of poor finishing and great goalkeeping kept the score level.

 

Leeds had the first chance of the match, Gary Kelly fired over the bar before the lively Danny Haynes fired wide for Town.

 

Kelly provided the chance for Eddie Lewis to open the scoring but the American could only find the arms of Town ‘keeper Shane Supple with his header, soon after Liam Miller was also denied by Supple.

 

Town hit back with two efforts going just wide, the first from Ian Westlake and soon after Matt Richards.

 

The visitors finished the half with the upper hand, Fabian Wilnis clearing the ball to safety following a goalmouth scramble and Shane Supple punching a header from Hulse clear.

 

Darren Currie replaced Jim Magilton for Town at the start of the second half and although the change didn’t make a difference to the overall game the score was changed soon after.

 

Matt Richards fed Danny Haynes and the youngster used his pace to break clear of the Leeds defence and slot the ball past Neil Sullivan in the Leeds goal.

 

Haynes came close to scoring again soon after, again his speed and skill to leave Leeds defender Paul Butler in knots on the left wing before racing at goal and hitting the bar with Sullivan beaten.

 

Alan Lee fired right into the arms of the Leeds ‘keeper before Rob Hulse and Eddie Lewis came close for Leeds, Hulse had his effort parried away by Supple before Lewis fired wide.

 

Danny Haynes had to leave the field with just over 20 minutes to play, Adam Proudlock coming on in his place, sadly Proudlock is not as far or skill as Haynes and it did show with Town’s attacking although having two more physical strikers did still cause a few minor problems for the visitors.

 

Leeds got thrown a life line with two minutes to go, referee Phil Crossley adjudged Jason De Vos to have handled the ball inside the area and awarded a penalty, Liam Miller stepped up to take the kick, sending it to the bottom left corner while Supple dived the other way.

 

Neither side could force a winner in the four minutes of stoppage time, leaving Town 11 points off the play-offs having played a game more than 6^th placed Palace and 5^th placed Preston.
