Ipswich Town drew their second league game of the season last night, visitors Southampton holding Town to a 2-2 at Portman Road last night.

The players left the pitch after just five minutes because the Portman Road flood lights failed which delayed the game for 40 minutes.

The crowd amused them selves during the lengthy break by chanting things such as “Powergen, Powergen, Powergen” and “Sheepshanks pay the bill, Sheepshanks Sheepshanks pay the bill.”

The game eventually restarted with a Southampton corner, but it was Town who looked marginally the better side in the final third of the field but were unable to find the back of the net.

Dean Bowditch fired over from a Jason De Vos cross, Sam Parkin forced Saints ‘keeper Antti Niemi to parry the ball out for a corner which Darren Currie took – Lundekvam cleared as far as Garvan whose volley was saved by Niemi.

Town finally got the goal they deserved in the 36th minute when Richard Naylor got his head on the then of a Darren Currie corner and directed the ball into the net.

Town defender Fabian Wilnis was replaced in first half stoppage time by Matt Richards, Jay McEveley went from left back to right back with Richards moving to the left of defence.

The saints drew level with Town five minutes into the second half when defender Darren Powell headed home Dennis Wise corner.

Town regained the lead 11 minutes later, Owen Garvan scored his first senior goal for Town when he picked up the lose ball outside the Southampton box and hit it with his left foot into the bottom corner.

The visitors hit back near instantly when Tomasz Hajto forced Town ‘keeper Lewis Price into a fingertip save, moments later Quashie hit the inside of the post and bounced out to Lundekvam who fired the lose ball over.

Harry Redknapp’s men did level the scores on 69 minutes, Matt Oakley crossed into the veteran Dennis wise who opened his goalscoring account for the saints with a flying header.

Southampton had a goal ruled out in the final minute as the whistle had gone for a foul earlier on.
