Not Again! - Brief History Of Our Play-Off Games

With Town preparing for another play-off campaign STB is pleased to bring you a brief history of Town’s last six play-off campaigns.

 

1986/87
Town finished 5th in Division Two. Charlton, who finished 19th in Division One, had to play for the right to retain their top flight status in rather confusing play-off system win against Leeds United.

TOWN 1 - Steve McCall (1)
(Charlton won 2-1 on aggregate)

1996/97
Town finished 4th in the league so had to try and overcome Sheffield united in the play-off semis. The blades came out on top over the two games because of the away goals rule.

TOWN 1 - Mick Stockwell

 

Second Leg
TOWN 2 - James Scowcroft, Niklas Gudmundsson.

Sheffield United 2 (AET)
(Sheffield United won on away goals rule)

1997/98
Town finished 5th in the league and face Charlton who finished just one place above them. Charlton went on to be promoted.

1998/99
Town finished 3rd in the league just one point behind Paul Jewell’s Bradford City side while Sunderland were crowned champions. Town played Bolton who finished 6th and lost on the away goals rule.

1999/00
Town finished 3rd in the league and could of gone up on the final day if Manchester City had lost against Blackburn but with City getting the result beating Blackburn 4-1 Town had to play Bolton who had again finished 6th in the league before they could play in the last ever domestic game at the old Wembley against Barnsley.

TOWN 5 - Jim Magilton (3), Jamie Clapham, Martijn Reuser.

TOWN 4 – Tony Mowbray, Richard Naylor, Marcus Stewart, Martijn Reuser

Barnsley 2

2004/05
Ipswich finished 5th. West Ham (4th) lost to Crystal Palace (6th) in the Cardiff final.

For those of you that have been looking for omens, we have a couple for you:

 

2000 - Finished 3rd two points behind man city, we could of gone up on the final day had man city lost, we had an orange away kit, we played the same team that defeated us in the previous years semi-finals and we played in the last play-off final game at Wembley.

 

2005 – Finished 3rd two points behind Wigan, we could have gone up on the final day had Wigan lost, we have an orange away kit, we are playing the same team that defeated us last year, the final will be the last one to be played at the Millennium Stadium.
