Ipswich Town’s youth team will go into the second leg of the FA Youth cup final needing nothing short of a win to lift the cup.

Two second half goals from Cathal Lordan cancelled out the first saints goal which came just before half time when David McGoldrick converted a penalty.

Up until the penalty Town had held Southampton off well but if it wasn’t for the quick reactions of Town goalkeeper Shane Supple the score line could have been much worse heading into half time as he made a number of good saves to keep out McGoldrick and Best earlier in the first half.

While Darryl Knights was doing his best to score for Town at the other end and maybe should of taken one less touch when as he bore down on the home sides goal, but the extra touch took it away from him and into the arms of saints ’keeper McNeil.

With the game looking going goalless into half time Aidan Collin’s brought down Theo Walcott and inside the box and conceded a penalty which McGoldrick put away.

Town started the second half in need of a goal and they found two inside 15 minutes of the restart, Cathal Lordan got them both the first coming on 47 minutes and from about 25 yards to level the scores up his second came ten minutes later when he hit home from ten yards following some great work from Darryl Knights and Southampton’s defenders being unable to clear.

Minutes later Southampton were level after Leon Best got the better of Supple and the Town defence at the second attempt to make it 2-2.

Both sides had chances to win the game before the final whistle but failed to find the back of the net so Friday’s second leg at Portman Road will decide the winner with extra time and penalties if needed.

The second-leg kicks-off at Portman Road at 7.45pm on Friday with tickets at £8 for adults and £1 for children.
