Ipswich Town maintained their five point lead at the top of the championship table after beating Leicester City 2-1 today.

Ipswich Town maintained their five point lead at the top of the championship table after beating Leicester City 2-1 today.

Shefki Kuqi got one of Town’s two while Mark de Vries scored an own goal for Towns second during the first half. Jordan Stewart scored Leicester’s goal late in the second half.

Town took the lead inside three minutes after Shefki Kuqi headed in Jim Magilton’s corner after Darren Currie forced Leicester ‘keeper Ian Walker to palm the ball out of play for the corner.

David Connolly tried to bring Leicester level soon after with a couple of long range efforts, Keith Gillespie also tried to get Leicester back on level terms but fired wide after 15 minutes.

Town took the lead less then 10 minutes after that, Ian Walker pushed Tommy Miller’s shot round the post and out for a corner which Darren Currie took Town defender Jason De Vos missed his header only for Leicester striker De Vries to slice into his own goal to give Town a 2-1 lead.

Leicester had the better of the rest of the first half with David Connolly only being denied a goal by a fine save from Kelvin Davis. James Scowcroft headed over the bar from Gillespie’s free kick.

Shefki Kuqi had to leave the field on a stretcher after Dion Dublin put a stud in to the area above the strikers Knee towards the end of the first half, Kevin Horlock coming on in his place.

Early in the second half De Vries tried to make up for his own goal in the first half but fired wide of the post.

Richard Naylor headed over Darren Currie’s free kick just past the hour while at the other end David Connolly again firing wide and Jason De Vos ensured Town remained in the lead when he cleared a Dabizas header off the line.

Jason De Vos, Tommy Miller and Darren Bent all had chances to extend Town’s lead before Leicester got a late goal back.

David Unsworth brought down Keith Gillespie just out side the box, Jordan Stewart converted the free kick with a little bit of help from the underside of the bar with 8 minutes to go.

Town rode their luck a bit for the remainder of the game but came out with all three points.
