Report: Coventry 1-2 Town

Ipswich Town moved up to second place in the football league championship after a 2-1 win against Coventry City earlier today.

Town started with a 4-3-3 formation with Dean Bowditch, Darren Bent and Shefki Kuqi leading from the front with Lewis Price starting in goal after Kelvin Davis failed to pass fit in time for kick off.

Coventry had the better of the first half over all but Town did find the net after just six minutes though Darren Bent who was offside.

Town again found the net after 8 minutes, Shefki Kuqi fired the ball into the net from 20 yards but was caught off side.

Ten minutes after that Coventry came close to opening the scoring from the penalty spot after Drissa Diallo bought down Tim Sherwood in the box, Stern John sent to spot kick to the right side of goal and Lewis Price guessed the right way and managed to got enough behind the ball to keep it out.

Two minutes later it was Town’s Dean Bowditch who could of made it 1-0 after Darren Bent’s effort was blocked by Luke Steele in the Sky Blue’s goal and Dean was on hand to fire a volley against the cross bar down to just in front of the line and out.

The first half ended goalless despite a lot of good chances either way and both sides can count them selves they were not at least one goal down.

Town had been under pressure a lot in the first half but came out for the second half a different side but were unable to convert any of the chances they had created they either went well over, such as Darren Bent in the 66th minute after Luke Steele’s throw was met by Kevin Horlock who set Bent up just inside the box but Bent mishit the ball and sent it well over the bar.

Four minutes later Dean Bowditch put Town in the lead with a simple tap in after Darren Bent found him at the back post.

Peter Reid introduced Patrick Suffo three minutes after Town had gone in front and after being on the pitch just four minutes Suffo bought Coventry level, chipping the ball over Lewis Price in the 77th minute.

Town played for the win and did get a second goal unfortunately for Coventry it was Matt Mills who put the ball past Luke Steele in the 87th minute, Lewis Price’s long goal kick was met by the foot of Mills who didn’t make enough contact with the wet ball to send into the stands but did get enough on it to send just out of reach of Steele who had came to collect the ball, 2-1 Town with three minutes left.

That’s how it ended Town move up into second place in the table only behind leaders Wigan on goal difference.
