West Ham 1-1 Town
Joe Royle marked his 100th game as Ipswich Town manager with 1-1 at Upton Park against West Ham united earlier today.
Pablo Couñago returned to the starting line up in place Shefki Kuqi, and was well worth his chance as it was his 57th minute goal that allowed Ipswich Town to come out of London with a vital point away from home.
West Ham started brightly enough and it took them only 11 minutes to take the lead, a certain Malky Mackay scoring his first goal for the hammers since moving from Norwich City.
Mackay nearly doubled his goal scoring tally, his headed effort was cleared off the line and then Kelvin Davis made a fine save to deny Luke Chadwick’s follow up.
Davis must have had luck on his side, he bought down Matthew Etherington inside the box for the referee to award a penalty which Teddy Sheringham stepped up to take and hit massively wide to the right hand side of the goal in the 35th minute.
West Ham finished the first half as the better team but they were unable to start the second as the better side as a new look Ipswich side came out and took the game to the hammers.
It just 11 minutes of the second half for Town to level the score, Couñago creating the shooting chance for him self from Jim Magilton’s corner in the 57th minute.
Town then had a great chance to go ahead not long after, a long pass from Couñago found Bent who charged towards the west ham goal and shot, only the finger tips of Stephen Bywater stopped what was almost a certain a goal sending the effort on to the bar.
In the 75th minute Joe Royle replaced Couñago and Magilton with Shefki Kuqi and Tony Dinning, five minutes later hammers boss Alan Pardew made his own double substitution with Teddy Sheringham and Luke Chadwick being replaced by Hayden Mullins and Sergei Rebrov.
In the three minutes of added on time both teams had chances to win the game and both failed 1-1 it ended at Upton Park, Town move down a place to 4th on 17 points two points behind leaders Wigan and one behind Reading and Stoke.
