Ipswich Town continued their fine start to the season, beating Brentford 2-0 in the first round of the carling cup at Portman road.

Ipswich Town continued their fine start to the season, beating Brentford 2-0 in the first round of the carling cup at Portman road.

Tommy Miller’s third goal in three games set Town on the way to the 2-0 win, with Ian Westlake netting the second deep into second half stoppage time.

Although the score line would suggest that Ipswich had it all their own way Brentford did make life difficult for the Town forwards and Dean Burton made life a little difficult for Lewis Price in the Ipswich goal, going close on a few occasions, Darren Bent going closer early on though sending an effort wide and having another shot blocked.

Alex Rhodes had Brentford’s first chance but Price had no real trouble in gathering his effort, Darren Bent was meanwhile again causing trouble for the Brentford ’keeper his shot being forced away by the shoot stopper.

0-0 at the break and Joe Royle decided that Shefki Kuqi was to come on to replace Pablo Couñago, who had found the net in the 17th minute but his goal was ruled out because of a foul on a Brentford player.

Ipswich failed to create any clear cut chances in the second before Miller’s goal in the 74th minute, Miller firing the ball home from 6 yards, Darren Bent getting the assist.

It was in the 93rd minute that town sealed the game up after Brentford pressure resulted in Brentford’s goal keeper going up for a corner and unable to return to his goal in time to stop Ian Westlake poking home Lewis Price’s long kick.
