Newcastle United caretaker manager Glenn Roeder has backed Shay Given to do a good job as captain.
Roeder said:
"First of all, he's an outstanding goalkeeper," Roeder told Sky Sports News. "He's an outstanding person as well.
"He carries huge respect around the dressing room and training ground on a daily basis. The players look up to him and he has the personality to captain the club.
"When I told him yesterday, on his 30th birthday, I could literally see the glow in his face rise up. He was delighted.
"It was actually nice, you know you have to give bad news quite often in this job, so when you give good news and see someone appreciate it, it's pretty gratifying, and I know Shay is going to enjoy these next three games so much.
“He's leading the team out with the first one tomorrow at St James' Park.
“He'll be a hugely proud man going down the tunnel."
"If Alan was ruled out for three games, Shay would be skipper for those three games."
