Newcastle United continued their excellent form under Glenn Roeder against a poor Bolton side a with 3-1 victory. Magpies' goals came from Solano, Shearer and Ameobi, while Bolton scored a late consolation goal through Davies.
This game was crucial for caretaker boss, Glenn Roeder but not only did he win he did it style the midfield was impressive and this contributed to Newcastle’s 62% possession ratio and this would’ve been much higher had it not been for the final 20 minutes of the game.
Right from the whistle Newcastle were playing well Ameobi came close but let the ball run out of play and didn’t get a proper shot in resulting in a corner. Emre came even closer as he hit the post. Boumsong too came close from a corner but there were chance down the other end to. Newcastle nearly scored an own goal through an Elliot diving header, the ball which was going in through a Nolan volley from a speed lay-off was deflected against the woodwork, it was a surprise the game was 0-0 but things quickly changed.
Newcastle’s dominant midfield was the key element in the victory the brilliant Emre and Parker controlled the game while N’Zogbia and Solano looked dangerous out wide. After a brilliant move N’Zogbia gave Ameobi the perfect lay-off but Ameobi’s composure was poor as he took a swipe at the ball and missed it completely. You got the feeling NUFC would score soon and that’s what happened as N’Zogbia passed a brilliant ball to Ameobi who was fouled about 30 yards out. The challenge was about 30 yards on the right and there was only ever going to be one taker as Nolberto Solano swung the ball into the back of the net close to the near post.
A second goal was inevitable and Alan Shearer grabbed his 202nd goal for Newcastle with an audacious header. Charles N’Zogbia once again the catalyst got the ball on the left hand side and swung in a brilliant cross which Shearer headed across Jussi Jaaskelainen who nearly saved the header but was unlucky not to.
Newcastle have had their defensive lapses in the past looked extremely comfortable at the back today with Parker and Boumsong deserving special praise, Parker who ran the game and Boumsong who was extremely composed today and didn’t make a single error.
The 2nd half was less eventful but what was clear was Bolton needed to change things so Pedersen came on for the poor Bruno N’Gotty. Newcastle started the 2nd half in style and kept the ball well, Scott Parker deserving special praise for his brilliant passing and ability to win the ball back quickly.
Emre had one shot which went wide but Newcastle continued there dominance. Ameobi looked to have been fouled in the box but the referee waved play on as Shearer hit a superb shot from the edge of the box with Jussi Jaaskelainen tipped over for a corner. From the resulting corner Solano crossed to Ameobi, who headed the ball back to Solano, who passed to N’Zogbia, who laid Emre off brilliantly as Emre shot from the edge of the box Shola Ameobi controlled the ball from seven yards out before coolly finishing, game over For Bolton.
Bolton scored a goal just over a minute later through sloppy defending from Ameobi, Babayaro and Elliot, Davies scored but this was no more than a consolation.
Three minutes later, the 75th minute Shay made his first save of the day from Pedersen. Newcastle then settled down and Bowyer came on for Emre and Ameobi went off for Luque. Newcastle held out to win a 3-1 deserved victory against a Bolton side that only played after the going 3-0 down. Luque got himself booked at the end for standing infront of Jussi Jaaskelainen as he tried to take a free-kick.
