Shearer A Doubt For Charlton Game

Newcastle United skipper Alan Shearer is a major doubt for Wednesday's Premiership clash with Charlton Athletic, having also sat out Saturday's FA Cup victory against former club Southampton - with a calf injury.

Magpies' caretaker manager Glenn Roeder insists that Shearer will, under no circumstances, be rushed back into action.

Speaking to NUFC.co.uk, Roeder said: "Alan is touch and go - 50-50 - to be ready for Charlton.

"We won't be impatient and risk him unnecessarily, but I don't see why he shouldn't be fit for Everton next Saturday if we don't take chances.

"I knew it was 70-30, perhaps even 80-20, that he wasn't going to start and we did really well to keep that quiet before the game.

"The scan revealed that he had a strain and if we had risked Alan there was every chance he would not have finished the game and been out for four to six weeks.

"We couldn't have that. It doesn't need me to say how important Alan Shearer is to Newcastle United - whether it be as a player or whether it will be as a manager."
