Kieron Dyer is aiming to be fit in time to face Liverpool at Anfield on Boxing Day, but Toon boss Graeme Souness does not want to rush the midfielder back into action too soon. Souness believes that if looked after, Dyer could yet make the squad for the 2006 World Cup. The news of Dyer's return to fitness will give the Scot even more reason to celebrate; the other reason being a 4-2 victory away at West Ham yesterday.

Injury problems have seen Dyer sidelined recently, but he is keen to make a comeback at Liverpool.

"Kieron's return would be an ideal Christmas present for everyone at the club," said Souness.

"We are monitoring him week by week and he is trying something new.

"We are just hoping we can get him back playing regular football.
