30-year-old Peruvian winger Nolberto Solano has confirmed he shunned a last minute bid from Liverpool in order to return to St James' Park.
Solano returned to Newcastle United late on Wednesday night as the transfer window ended.
It has now been revealed that European champions Liverpool were also desperate to bag Solano; after thier attempt to sign Simao Sabrosa has fallen through.
Solano said: "I'd already given the Newcastle people my word but I was never going to turn down the chance to go back there, even for a great club like Liverpool.
"Newcastle is the club I have always loved. It has a place in my heart and it's a great feeling to be back. It's as if I was never away.
"I was watching the Michael Owen signing and heard what the fans were singing about me.
"That was a very special moment for me but they must understand I love them, too."
