Newcastle United confirmed today that an agreement has been reached between them and Real Madrid regarding the transfer of Michael Owen.

Owen had earlier stated that he would only join Newcastle on loan, however Freddy Shepherd appears to be confident enough he can land Owen on a permanent basis.

Although undisclosed, the fee is confirmed to be a club record, with the most expensive fee paid at the moment being for Alan Shearer at £15mill.

Newcastle have failed in several attempts to land a striker this summer, and are desperately short following the departures of Patrick Kluivert and Craig Bellamy.
