Jebediah’s roundup of Monday's tabloid newspapers, and a look at the stories and rumours involving Newcastle United.

From The Sun, we will find out within the next 24 hours whether our bid for Nicolas Anelka is successful. Graeme Souness has made his interest in the striker very public, and the paper is saying that the manager, chairman and everyone else involved with the club are confident that the deal will be successful.

Souness recently said the player was "desperate" to come back and play in the Premiership. After The Magpies played at the weekend, he also said "Very soon we will have more than one fit striker here!"

On the day Newcastle bid for Anelka, the club also had a bid for Fulham's Luis Boa Morte rejected, however the press are claiming that Newcastle are ready to up their offer to around £4-4.5mill, and this will be enough to tempt Fulham in to selling. Souness tried to sign the winger in January, only for Boa Morte to sign a new contract with Fulham, however the word is that the Portuguese international would be interested in a move to Tyneside, with the possibility of European football.

The Mirror has Souness quotes from the weekend regarding Sami Hypia. the manager is very keen to bring in a central defender after the long term loss of Titus Bramble, however the Hypia deal seems to be a non starter after Souness said he would not be prepared to offer him a 3 year deal.

Finally, from all the papers, Newcastle have reached the semi final of the InterToto cup after knocking out Dubnica 5-1 on aggregate. The Toon won 2-0 at the weekend, with club captain Alan Shearer netting both goals.
