Jebediah’s roundup of Friday's tabloid newspapers, and a look at the stories and rumours involving Newcastle United.
Main news today from The Star and The Sun is that former Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan has given current manager Graeme Souness the green light to sign Nicolas Anelka.
Souness said yesterday, "When I spoke to Kevin he told me he believes Nicolas Anelka to be one of the best strikers he had worked with." Keegan worked with Anelka at Man City for two seasons.
The papers are saying that now Souness is sure Anelka is the right man, he has tabled a £5m bid for the Frenchman. However it could be a bit more complicated than that for Newcastle, as Fenerbahce only signed him 6 months ago for a fee reported to be £7m, so whether they would take a £2m loss on their man after just 6 months of football is debatable but Souness seems confident he can land Anelka.
Many people have questioned Anelkas attitude on the field, however as Souness has said he is not much bother off the field. People have argued that he is not a "Souness type of player" and there could be a personality clash, however I disagree. Anelka at his best is a top player at any level, and even if it is only a short term affair I think it will be well worth bringing him in, and he could bag 20 a season for Newcastle undoubtedly. He has a lot of Premier League experience after playing for Arsenal, Man City and he also had a spell on loan at Liverpool.
Other transfer news in this mornings tabloids is that Arsenal could turn their attention to Olivier Dacourt following the sale of Patrick Vieira. This will ease Toon fans worries after reports that Wenger has a desire to take young Jermaine Jenas to Highbury.
Final Newcastle-related news is for the first time in ten years, the club have had to advertise season tickets after they faced not selling out.
