Paper Talk - Wednesday July 20

Jebediah’s roundup of Wednesday's tabloid newspapers, and a look at the stories and rumours involving Newcastle United.

Just two stories in this mornings tabloids, and both are being reported by The Sun.

The first is about Fenerbahce striker Nicolas Anelka, and Newcastle's interest in him. Apparently Graeme Souness has upped his bid for the player to £6m now, and the offer is on the table for the Turkish club to consider. Souness has confirmed he is keen to bring the player back to the Premiership, where in my opinion a player of his calibre deserves to be playing.

However, as the paper reports, the Turks have said he is not for sale at any price. Anelka only joined them in January, and they are not willing to take a loss after they paid £7m for his services. Interestingly, Sky Sports says that the fee was actually 7m euros, meaning our £6m offer would signal a profit of around £0.75m for the club, but it is yet to be clarified.

The Fenerbahce vice president said "We've not bought Nicolas to sell him," so it remains unclear why Souness seems quite confident he can get his man.

Other news from The Sun is that Kieron Dyer will see a specialist today as his hamstring has caused problems for him once again. He was not involved in Newcastle's InterToto cup match at the weekend as he "felt his hamstring" (as Souness put it). It appears that there could be more to it now and all will be revealed once he has seen the specialist.

Dyer has had his fair share of injuries over the years, with his hamstrings often causing problems. The paper says he is now a doubt for Saturday's InterToto return leg.

Other news from the media is that yesterday Newcastle completed the signing of young Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul, who has signed a three year deal with the club. He revealed it was "his dream" to play in the Premiership.

Finally, for those fans who are keen to get on Souness' back, Laurent Robert scored for Pompey last night in a friendly against Bordeaux.
