Dyer was signed from his hometown club Ipswich Town for £6 million is 1999. He was one of the first signings by Sir Bobby Robson.

Shortly after joining Newcastle, Dyer made his debut for England and has been a regular in the squad ever since.

Dyer has been a regular in the Newcastle side ever since been signed, but has often struggled with injuries, especially in the 2001-2002 season where he managed only 15 starts all year.

Due to lots of gaps in between games with injuries, Dyer has not scored as many goals that people expect from him, scoring no more than 6 a season.

Dyer has a bad year in the 2004-2005 season, by refusing the captains armband in protest to being played on the right wing, which infuriated Toon fans. After being forgiven by fans, Dyer then got in a fight with team-mate Lee Bowyer on the field, but Dyer was not blamed for the fight.
