Jebediah’s roundup of Tuesday's tabloid newspapers, and a look at the stories and rumours involving Newcastle United.
One story which looks like its going to have us on the edge of our seats for the rest of the summer is the Jermaine Jenas to Arsenal rumour.
Todays update, from The Sun, is that if we hold out for the asking price Graeme Souness has quoted, Arsenal will turn their attention to Bayern Munich midfielder Owen Hargreaves. Souness has said if they want to take Jenas to Highbury, they will have to pay at least £20m for his services, £6.25m more than they just sold Vieira for. Apparently this is way more than the amount Arsenal would be prepared to shell out for him, with the highest they would offer being £9m, less than half the amount Graeme Souness would want. The manager has reiterated over the summer that he sees Jenas as an important player, and one he sees as a future captain of the club as well.
Wenger will turn his attention to Hargreaves though, as he will be available for just £6m. The Englishman recently turned down a move to Middlesbrough, however according to the paper he would jump at the chance to move to the Gunners, where he would play in front of England manager Sven Goran Eriksson regularly, and be more involved with the first team than he currently is at Bayern.
The paper also continues to mention the possibility of a swap deal with Sol Campbell moving the other way, as Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd is very keen on the idea.
Other transfer news involves Nicolas Anelka's proposed move back to the Premiership, despite departing only 6 months ago for Fenerbache. All this mornings tabloids have reported that despite quotes from the player and his current club that he will be going nowhere, Graeme Souness still believes he can get his man, and will step up his approach over the coming week.
The contravertial striker has been known to come and go, and a move away from a club he only joined 6 months ago would not surprise many football fans. His apparent attitude and mentality has given him the nickname "Le Sulk". The fee being mentioned is £4m, however whether the Turkish club would accept that seems doubtful to me, as it would signal a £3m loss plus his wages they have paid over just half a year.
Finally, Crystal Palace striker Andy Johnson has once again been linked with a move away from Selhurst Park, but surprisingly this time to Spanish club Seville. The Toon have constantly been linked with the England striker, who scored the second most Premier League goals last year after Thierry Henry, however this is his first link to an overseas club. Apparently, they need a consistent goal scorer to replace goal-machine Julio Baptista, who seems likely to move to either Arsenal or Spurs this summer.
