Newcastle Chairman Freddy Shepherd fears Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer may retire early.

The ex-England captain agreed to stay on for another year, but Shepherd believes if Shearer is struggling to score, then he may retire early.

Shearer is 8 goals off Jackie Millburn’s all-time top Newcastle United scoring record off 200 goals.

Shepherd said:

"It may have been a risk, but we're delighted Alan's taken it,"

"Once he has Milburn's record, then I believe he would just quit if it was not going for him.

"He's a proud man, he'd never cheat the fans."

"Shearer's imperative in the dressing room,"

"Players listen to him, and look up to him.

"He wants to help Graeme Souness because he sees a lot of himself in his manager.

"He understands where Graeme is going."
