Christian Vieri - Officially A Free Agent

Newcastle United and Spurs target Christian Vieri is a free agent, after his contract was cancelled by Inter Milan, despite having a year left to run. The Magpies' are in need of a striker, with Alan Shearer the only experienced striker set to report to pre-season training on Monday. Shola Ameobi is out of action until the end of August at least, Patrick Kluivert left on a free, and Craig Bellamy's future is still in doubt.

Newcastle have been linked with Vieri, Alan Smith and Robbie Keane (who has made enquiries about the set-up at St James' Park.).

A statement on the official Inter website, Inter.it, stated:

"Inter and Christian Vieri have decided to rescind the player's contract with the club, due to expire on June 30 2006.

"Negotiations between the player and the club progressed smoothly, and the documents related to the issue were registered at the Lega Calcio offices this morning.

"FC Internazionale thanks Christian Vieri for his contribution to the history of the club over the past six years.

"Christian Vieri thanks Inter and its fans for the professional respect and affection which characterised the relationship."

To be honest, I would have loved to see Vieri at Newcastle three years or so ago, partnering Alan Shearer, but I am not so sure about him now. Does he still have what it takes?

Perhaps Smith would be the better option...
