Paper Talk - Thursday June 30

June 30 2005

Jebediahs weekday roundup of all the stories and rumours from the days tabloids involving Newcastle United.

A fairly quiet day in todays papers following the comments made by Laurent Robert over the past couple of days.

Regarding that, the papers are reporting that he will face more discipline from the FA after United reported his behaviour to officials. The Star and The Mail both seem to think that it is fairly likely that he will face further prosecution for his outburst.

Moving on to transfer news, from The Sun, it seems more and more likely that Hugo Viana and Craig Bellamy will both end up at training when it begins next week. Manager Graeme Souness is desperate to offload the pair, but it appears there have been no concrete offers for Viana, and Bellamy's wages are causing problems for other clubs.

The Mirror is reporting that Jermaine Jenas wants to hold talks with club officials over what the future holds for him. After getting back from holiday, Jenas is worried about his first team place following the signings of Scott Parker and possibly Belozoglu Emre. Apparently, sources close to Jenas have said that he wants to hold showdown talks due to other problems as well, described as "deep-seated personal reasons." This news will alert Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Man Utd who are all keen on signing the England midfielder. The Mirror's opinion is that Man Utd are in the best position to negotiate as Souness is keen on bringing Quinton Fortune and Alan Smith to Tyneside. The asking price for Jenas would be around £10m.

Finally, from all the papers, Real Madrid have released a statement saying alleged Toon target Michael Owen is not for sale. United were linked with a bid straight after the end of the Premiershp campaign, but Madrid's director of football has said Owen will not be leaving as he is "a part of Luxemburgo's (the manager's) plans." Newcastle have been linked with many strikers due to the exit of Patrick Kluivert and possibly Bellamy.
