Newcastle Chairman Freddy Shepherd has revealed that the club have no intention of selling central midfielder, Jermaine Jenas.

The Daily Mirror yesterday reported Spurs had a £6 million bid turned down by the Geordies and were ready to bid more.

Shepherd has confirmed to the press that Jenas will not be leaving as he is one of the clubs best players.

Shepherd said:

"We're not in the business of selling our best players and JJ definitely falls into that category,"

"Graeme Souness made him captain when Alan Shearer was injured last season and I would imagine he's a leading candidate to take the armband on a permanent basis once Alan retires. That's how highly he's rated here.

"There's been no contact at all from Spurs but even if there was, they would be wasting their time."
