Newcastle United's out of favour midfielder Hugo Viana looks unlikely to remain in Portual next season, with Porto and Benfica withdrawing their interest. It was understood that the two clubs were set to make moves for the 22-year-old this summer, although this now looks unlikely - leaving Newcastle with a frustrated player who cost them £8.5m under Sir Bobby Robson.

Hugo Viana spent last season on loan at Sporting Lisbon and had hoped to kickstart a career abroad. He said: "It's been a very difficult time for me and I still don't know what will happen.

"At this stage of the summer every player is starting to think about next season but I don't know where I'll be.

"I was told a deal would be sorted out by the start of the month and then I was told it would be by the end of last week. But still nothing has happened and I may have to move away from Portugal again. I am ready to go anywhere to play football."

The former European Young Player of the Year has told how he has not been contacted by Newcastle regarding pre-season training on 4th July, although like Craig Bellamy, he has no intention of staying away - although in the long term, is not looking for a Premiership return.

Newcastle and Sporting are in negotiations with a view to reach a deal which would suit both clubs, although the Magpies' would want at least £3m for the player, having sold Laurent Robert at a loss.
