Laurent Robert will NOT be allowed to face Newcastle United this coming season.... Robert spent four years at St James' Park, and will follow the footsteps of former teammates Andy Griffin, Lomana LuaLua and Andy O'Brien in wearing the Pompey shirt.

Despite Bolton ofering him the same wages as Newcastle had been paying him, Pompey manager Alain Perrin persuaded Robert to sign.

The French manager has ambitious plans with Portsmouth in which Robert could play a major part. On Perrin, Robert said: "You can see that the Portsmouth players enjoy their football again since Perrin joined them, that's one of the reasons why I opted to join Portsmouth instead of Bolton, who offered me bigger wages".

Freddy Shepherd has confirmed that part of the deal which took the French man to the South Coast, was that he would be ineligible for games between the two sides.
