It Was Kluivert’s Choice

It would appear that Patrick Kluivert’s decision to leave Newcastle United was his own due to a clause in his contract.

It seemed that the club had released the Dutchman after just 1 disappointing season but a Top 10 Clause in his contract meant he could leave the club.

Kluivert’s agent, Paul Foortse said:

"We had a clause in the contract,"

"When Newcastle were not in the top ten of The Premiership, Patrick could leave the club for free.

"
Newcastle laughed about the clause as they couldn't expect that they wouldn't be in the top ten. We have seen it. Now they couldn't exercise the option for another two seasons and Patrick can look for another club."
