Newcastle manager has defended Alan Shearer after claims that the team played better without the ex-England captain.

Shearer has not had the best of seasons by his standards and after singing a new 1-year-contract, some fans feel he is just holding the team back.

But after taking fire from many fans in an interview, Souness defended the footballing legend, insisting the team is better with him.

Souness said:

“Alan Shearer has given phenomenal service to this football club and I don't think anyone who has the interests of Newcastle United at heart can criticise anything he has done.

“He's been a one-man show at times. Indeed, if you take Alan Shearer's goals out of Newcastle United every year he has been here they are a mid-table team.”
